Los Chicos y el Acceso a Internet

students-informal.jpgHace unos 10 días tuve una conversación interesantísima con 2 chicos en un barrio marginal de Buenos Aires (Adrián y Walter; 15 y 19 años). Hablamos 10 minutos sobre Internet. Los dos conocían Internet. Los dos habían navegado. Uno usaba frecuentemente el Internet. A los dos les gustaría navegar más y les gustaría estar mucho más conectados porque “es muy divertido”, porque “hay de todo”, “porque se puede hablar con otros gratis”. Todos coincidían en que se le hacía muy muy difícil y muy caro el acceso a Internet. Además, Adrián y Walter no habían recibido nunca ninguna educación sobre como sacar provecho del Internet, lo que sabían, lo sabían por amigos. En sus escuelas no habían tenido acceso a Internet.

Esta semana conversé un rato con un par de jóvenes amigos virtuales y les pedí que me contasen qué uso le dan ellos al Internet. Uno estudia Sistemas, el otro es contador. Uno (Marcos) trabaja en una compañía y el otro (Javier) es un entrepreneur jóven. Los dos me contaron como Internet les ha facilitado enormemente la vida. Ambos tienen conexiones de banda ancha. Ellos reciben alrededor de 75 emails diarios y contestan entre 30 y 50 para conectarse con amigos y familia y para hacer negocios y ganar sus ingresos. Usan Google 2 o 3 veces por día para mantenerse actualizados, aprender y auto-educarse. Hablan por Skype (http://www.skype.com/) 2 o tres veces por semana para ahorrar costos de telefonía nacional e internacional. Compran frecuentemente en sitios como DeRemate (http://www.deremate.com/) o MercadoLibre “porque son mucho más baratos que comprar en la calle”. Uno de ellos incluso consiguió su trabajo a través de http://www.bumeran.com/ un sitio de búsqueda de trabajo. Uno de ellos compra música en http://www.itunes.com/ porque “podés comprar las canciones de a una, y no tenés que comprar todo el disco”. Los dos leen los diarios a través de internet y son bloggeros frecuentes. Tienen 19 y 23 años. A ellos, el acceso a Internet les da conocimiento, les permite ahorrar costos en sus compras, les ofrece entretenimiento gratis, les acerca oportunidades de trabajo, los acerca a sus amigos y familiares, en una palabra, les genera mucho valor. En la secundaria habían tenido acceso a Internet en la escuela.

El problema en Argentina es que tal vez 15-20% (si eso) de los chicos pueden aspirar a ser como Marcos y Javier que tienen acceso fácil a Internet y el 80-85% son más parecidos a Walter y a Adrián –y están del otro de la pared Internet podría ayudarlos a saltar la pared.

Esta semana, uno de los creadores de la feria del libro, Isay Klasse (83 años, pionero cultural) decía que “existe una correlación entre el libro y la pantalla de la computadora. Es decir que hay un vínculo estrecho entre el mundo de Gutenberg y el universo de Bill Gates”. Una educación en el Siglo XXI que no incluye acceso masivo a Internet es una educación incompleta. Una educación que mantiene la exclusión.

Países como Estonia o Chile se han propuesto avanzar en esta línea. Mis próximos blogs van a hablar más de esto. Van a contar como dos países en desarrollo se pusieron las pilas en serio y están logrando un acceso masivo a Internet….

  3. Hola Alec.Soy:… un (no tan joven) entrepreneur argentino que vive en Estados Unidos.

    Estoy tratando de hacer algo tendiente a ayudar a los que “están del otro lado de la pared” a saltarla, porque eso nos beneficia a todos.

    No los voy a aburrir acá con mis teorías sobre Knowledge Dynamics donde trato de asimilar los principios de la termodinámica al conocimiento, pero si te pido a vos y a tus lectores que visiten mi blog collares + necklaces y si tienen alguna idea que compartir será muy bienvenida.

    El foco del blog es muy amplio, por eso van a encontrar allí cosas aparentemente inconexas… como un senador de USA hablando desde un simposio sobre preservación…, pero si lo leen gestalticamente cobra más sentido.

    Una pregunta: habrá entre los argentinos UN millón que tiren todos para el mismo lado y logren cosas como los de Estonia?.
